Stop the Bleed Information

A severe bleeding injury can happen to anyone, at any time. Always call 9-1-1 and get help.

Three Ways to Control Bleeding

  1. Apply pressure with hands. (If you have gloves available, make sure you wear them.)
  2. Pack the wound and press.
  3. Apply a tourniquet.

Know How to Take Action

  • Be the First to Act in Emergencies: No matter how fast professional emergency responders arrive, bystanders will always be first on the scene.
  • Every Minute Counts: A person experiencing life-threatening bleeding can die from blood loss within minutes, before first responders arrive.
  • Anyone Can Learn: A bystander with STOP THE BLEED® training can slow or stop blood loss to keep someone alive until first responders arrive.

Find a training course and learn more about how to control bleeding on the ACS Stop the Bleed program website.
