MEDIA RELEASE
BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County is accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) through December. The annual assistance program helps eligible households with a one-time payment sent directly to their heating vendor to offset the cost of warming their homes during the cold weather months.
Brunswick County Social Services began accepting applications from adults who are at least 60 years old or people with disabilities receiving services through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Division of Aging on Dec. 2, 2024.
Not all individuals will need to apply for this benefit. NCDHHS will issue automated payments to heating vendors for the 2024-2025 LIEAP season if a member of the household meets the following three requirements:
- Is age 60 or older or a person with a disability receiving services through the NCDHHS Division of Aging,
- Currently receives Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), and
- Received a LIEAP payment during the 2023-2024 LIEAP season.
These households were notified of eligibility in November 2024 and do not need to re-apply for this benefit.
Any household with a person aged 60 or older or a person with a disability receiving services through the NCDHHS Division of Aging who did not receive notice of an automated payment is encouraged to submit an online application at epass.nc.gov. Applicants can also contact their local department of social services (DSS) to apply by phone, in person, or print a paper application from epass.nc.gov to mail, fax, email, or drop off at their local DSS. Applicants may contact their local DSS for information on how to obtain a paper application.
Brunswick County residents can email applications to Brunswick County Social Services at dss.fns.ma@brunswickcountync.gov. Households who want to apply over the phone, need to report a change, or have questions regarding LIEAP can call 910.253.2077.
Beginning Jan. 2, 2025, all other households who meet the eligibility requirements may begin applying. All household applications will be accepted from Jan. 2, 2025, to March 31, 2025, or until funds are exhausted.
To be eligible for the LIEAP program, a household must:
- Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility requirements,
- Have income equal to or less than 130% of the federal poverty limit, and
- Be responsible for their heating cost.
