Below is a list of common public record requests that can be found online or must be handled by other departments or agencies. If your inquiry falls under one one of these common requests, you must reach out to that entity directly.
Attention: Courthouse Records
Brunswick County Court is separate from Brunswick County Government, though the Courthouse is located at the county government center. Brunswick County Government cannot provide court-related records.
You can obtain information regarding divorce records, traffic violations, criminal background checks, estate filings, wills, or other court-related records (such as criminal and civil disputes) by contacting the Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court or through the online Judicial Branch Public Records Request Form.

| Civil Court (CV) | Civil Cases: What most people think of when they hear the word "lawsuit." In civil court, one party files a lawsuit against another, asking for money or for a court order against the other party. Civil cases include topics such as divorce, domestic violence and protection orders, family-related cases, landlord/tenant issues, and small claims court. | Criminal Court: The government (usually referred to as "the State") prosecutes a person for breaking the law, with the possibility of punishment like jail time or a fine. Crimes include felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions (many of the most commonly-charged traffic offenses are infractions). | Estate Proceedings (E) | Estates: The legal management and distribution of a person's property and assets, usually after they have died, but this type of case also applies to some living persons who need someone else to manage their affairs for them, like an adult or minor who needs a legal guardian. | Special Proceedings (SP) | Special Proceedings: A special category of cases that the General Assembly has decided aren't regular "civil" cases. Common special proceedings involve certain family or financial relationships between the parties, like adoptions and incompetency hearings for adults who might need guardians. Other special proceedings decide the disposition or ownership of land ("real property"), like foreclosures, "partitions" (a process to divide a single piece of property between its multiple owners), and some boundary disputes. Brunswick County cannot escheat and does not generate escheat reports. In North Carolina, only the State can escheat, and only on funds that have been held in excess of five years, unless ordered differently by the Courts or an agency with seizure authority.
